My Little Hands
My little hands play patty-cake they peek-a-boo and wave. They catch me while I learn to walk and splash me as I bathe. My little hands reach up to you, for hugs before I sleep, and fold together when I pray the Lord my soul to keep. My little hands are tiny now but yours will serve to guide me And when I'm grown I'll still reach out and know you're right beside me.

Sometimes you get discouraged, because I am so small And leave my little fingerprints On furniture and walls. But everyday I'm growing And soon will be so tall That all these little fingerprints Will be difficult to recall. So here's a little handprint That you can put away So you will know how my fingers looked On this special day.

Oh child you are of my dreams Shining star of my day. My universe you are or so it seems; Be at peace, I pray. Oh dear one you are my prize Fusing joy with every day. Fulfilled and blessed are the wise May you too be, I pray. What will they do each day? Though all around may roar like thunder May you be true to yourself, I pray.

When I’m big you won’t remember the mud I tracked on stairs. Instead I hope that you will hear my laugh that eased your cares. The smudges that I leave on walls will someday fade away. But the memories of my first steps will be cherished every day. As for these two handprints, someday you will be gladthat didn’t make you mad.

This hand I hold is small right now. Your tiny fingers barely encircling mine. But you will grow so quickly. Soon your hand will reach out to me And I will steady your first steps. A few more years fly by Our hands are linked as we walk To your classroom on the first day of school. And now your hand reaches out For a diploma – for your beloved – for a baby of your own Whose tiny fingers barely encircle yours.
