Not how did he die,but how did he live? Not,what did he gain, but what did he give? These are the units to measure the worth Of a man as a man, regardless of birth. Not what was his church, nor what was his creed? But had he befriended those really in need? Was he ever ready, with a word of good cheer, To bring back a smile, to banish a tear? Not what did the sketch in the newspaper did say, But how many were sorry when he passed away?

Gravy
No other word will do. For that’s what it was. Gravy. Gravy, these past ten years. Alive, sober, working, loving and Being loved by a good woman. Eleven years Ago he was told that he had six months to live At the rate he was going. And he was going nowhere But down. So he changed his ways Somehow. He quit drinking! And the rest? After that it was all gravy, every minute Of it, up to and including when he was told about, Well, some things were breaking down and Building up inside his head.”Don’t weep for me” He said to his friends.”I’m a lucky man. I’ve had ten years longer than I or anyone expected. Pure gravy. And don’t forget it” Raymond Carver1939-88

"This is an Epitaph on a friend In Loving Memory Poem
An honest man here lies at rest, The friend of man, the friend of truth The friend of age, and guide of youth: Few hearts like his, with virtue warmed, Few heads with knowledge so in formed; If there’s another world ,he lives in bliss; If there is none, he made the best of this. Robert Burns

By herself and her friends If I should go before the rest of you Break not a flower or inscribe a stone Nor when I’m gone speak in a Sunday voice But be the usual selves I’be known. Weep if you must, Parting is hell, But life goes on, So sing as well. Joyce Grenfell

"Good Night Willie Lee, I’ll see you in the morning"
Looking down into my father’s dead face For the last time my mother said, Without smiles, without regrets, but with civility “Good Night, Willie Lee, I’ll see you in the morning” And it was then I knew that the healing of all our wounds is forgiveness that permits a promise of our return at the end. Alice Walker

Pablo Neruda When I die, I want your hands on my eyes: I want the light and wheat of your beloved hands To pass their freshness over me once more; I want to feel the softness that changed my destiny.
I want you to live while I wait for you, asleep. I want your ears still to hear the wind, I want you To sniff the sea’s aroma that we loved together,So that you can reach everything my love directs to you to, So that my shadow can travel along your hair, So that everything can learn the reason for my song.

This truth came born with bier and pall, I felt it, when I sorrowed most. Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all.
But I remained, whose hopes were dim, Whose life, whose thoughts were little worth, To wander on a darkened earth, Where all things round me breathed of him.
Whatever ways my days decline, I felt and feel, though leftb alone, His being working in mine own, The footsteps of his life in mine;
And so passion hath not swerved To works of weakness, but I find An image comforting the mind, And in my grief a strength reserved. Lord Alfred Tennyson.

In Loving Memory Poems for a child
Epitaph upon a child that died
Here she lies, a pretty bud, Lately made of flesh and blood: Who as soon fell fast asleep As her little eyes did peep Give her strewings, but did not stir The earth that lightly covers her. Robert Herrick

A Celtic Blessing
Deep peace of the running wave to you, Deep peace of the flowing air to you, Deep peace of the quiet earth to you, Deep peace of the shining stars to you, Deep peace of the Son of Peace to you, May the road rise to meet you; May the wind always be at your back; May the sun shine warm upon your face; May the rains fall softly upon your fields. Until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

For a Stillborn Baby
We held you in our arms For a short time that is true; You won our hearts and our love We will always remember you.
The angels are with you By your side they will always be; Your soul flies on and stays with them And you will always be free.
There are some things you just treasure A new baby in the fold; You stayed asleep though here on earth We're glad we had a hold. Maggie-May
